The detail
On July 30th, current President Nicolas Maduro ordered the withdrawal of diplomatic personnel in Caracas from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Dominican Republic and Uruguay. He also ordered the return of Venezuelan representatives in these 7 Latin American countries.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil affirms that the Venezuelan government” reserves all legal and political actions to enforce, preserve and defend our inalienable right to self-determination”,This is in light of tensions following President Maduro announcing his election victory.
The closure of diplomatic posts and office closures in large cities, due to civil unrest, are expected to lead to delays in the processing of immigration applications. In addition, travel has been impacted due to flight cancellations from countries such as the Dominican Republic, Peru and Panama to Venezuela.
Actions
It is advisable for employers with global workforces in the region to ensure they are aware of their population (including current location, all dependants in location with the employee, nationality and any other visas held) and ensure lines of communication with the employees are open.
